Who says that you can’t learn and improve your English with TV Shows? During my time learning English, I found myself wondering how I can my listening skills and learning new vocabulary in a more entertaining way than reading books and doing exercises. The answer was clear: TV shows. As a TV shows nerd I am going to recommend some TV shows which helped me with my English skills.
Penny Dreadful
If you are a fan of Dracula, Frakenstein, werewolves stories, I personally recommend this show. The plot is set up in the Victorian London and follows the story of the medium Vanessa Ives (Eva Green), the explorer Sir Malcolm Murray (Timothy Dalton) and the American Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett) who are united to combat supernatural forces in the city of London.
The Crown
Whether you are a history and royal geek, this TV show is perfect for you. The plot follows the story of the Queen Elizabeth II (Claire Foy, Olivia Colman), her rise to power and the most significant events in the twentieth century.
Game of Thrones
I am sure many of you have already watched this very popular TV show (just let’s forget the last season!) but if you haven’t, you should give it a try if you are a fan of fantasy and Middle-earth stories. The plot follows the story of different families fighting for the control of the Seven Kingdoms.
Downton Abbey
Another popular TV show, if you are into “soup-operas” then you will enjoy it. The plot follows the story of a British aristocracy family, the Crawley and their servants in the early twentieth century.
Peaky Blinders
Although this might be difficult to understand because the characters tend to speak very quickly and use a lot of coloquial expressions, it is still a good show to watch to improve your listening skills. The plot is set up in the 1900s Birmingham and it follows the story of a gangster family and their leader, Thomas Shelby (Cillian Murphy).
The Great
Let’s add a little bit of comedy here, this time is another TV show about royals. It follows the story of Catherine The Great, Empress of Russia (Elle Fanning) and her plot to dethrone her husband the Emperor Peter III (Nicholas Hoult).
Killing Eve
This is one of my favorites, a mix of dark-comedy and drama, the plot follows the story of Eve Polastri (Sandrah Oh) a MI6 agent who is assigned the task to find an international assasin, Villanelle (Jodie Comer).
I, Claudius
Recommendation
- Always watch these TV shows in their original version with English subtitles
